Website Changes Ahead

I’ve been running a website for the Clary Lake Association since I was elected President of the organization back in 2007. The first website ran on and old 486 computer in my office with the host name clary.gwi.net. Since then I’ve changed servers several times, each time moving to newer and faster equipment. For the past few years the site has been running on a rented VPS (Virtual Private Server) and honestly, the work involved in administering a unix server has become a drag. I’m now looking to simplify my life in a big way. To that end, we’re getting ready to make one final move, to a Commercial Hosting Provider. System administration will become a SEP (Somebody Else’s Problem, my favorite kind of problem!) and I’ll be able to devote my time to the site and other fun stuff rather than spending time keeping the underlying system running smoothly. This move is slated to take place somewhere around the last week of November.

We’re not planning any site changes at this time so hopefully the migration will go smoothly. However, with a move like this, stuff breaks and there will be issues to resolve and things that need tweaking. Also, duplicating all the back end pieces and site functionality may take some extra time too. In particular, our Clary_cams network may not be fully operational to start. we’ll try to get them back on line as soon as possible. Nonetheless, the cameras will continue to be available for live-viewing throughout the move. If you haven’t tried live-view, you should!

I’ll post again just prior to the move.

You’re welcome Ronnie. I’m hoping that with this server change, I’ll spend less time on droll administration tasks and more time on fun lake-related stuff!
