Summer 2012

$Looking north towards the Sennott road across the mapped waterfowl and wading bird habitat. The duck blind is just outside the frame at right. There isn\'t any water up there to speak of- you can only get a little ways up Clark\'s Meadow Brook now before running out of channel because it has grown in so heavily with rice and marsh grass. $The loons are nesting again! They have built this nest in the traditional nesting area over on the north shore and they\'ve situated it higher than the last one which was flooded out. Unfortunately, it runs a real risk of being left stranded as the lake recedes. Currently the water level is almost 34\" below the top of the dam and falling at about 1\" per day. Photograph by George Fergusson 21 June 2012$ $Short wild rice flowers (Zizania palustris angustifolia). Very delicate. Wild rice is self-pollinating though various insects will collect the pollen for protein. Wild rice is an annual meaning the plants only live for one year. New plants start growing each spring from rice grains that fell into the water the previous fall.. Short wild rice is an important food for birds and waterfowl and a source of cover for a great many more critters. There\'s a pretty good crop of it this year despite the low water. Most of it is growing right along the edges of the channel and it only extends a short ways towards shore on either side of the channel.
